Cabot fire destroys homes, unites strangers

CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) -- An apartment complex fire in Cabot over the weekend has left two families homeless.

One family just moved to Arkansas two weeks ago.

Shereka Toney didn't know a soul when she picked up her life and moved to Arkansas from Texas earlier this month.

Then tragedy struck and turned her life upside down, but it also showed her friendships can be found during the most unlikely situations.

"We actually had just put our beds up, the stuff on the walls, we still weren't even all the way unpacked," said mother of four, Shereka Toney.

The plan to start fresh for the single mother quickly turned into tragedy Saturday night when her new apartment went up in flames.

"I hadn't even met the neighbors yet. I was just unpacking and then it happened," said Toney.

The fire spread quickly to the connecting apartment, where Rachel Nees and her son were living.

"I went outside to look and I could see the flames coming from next door," said Nees.

Both families escaped unharmed, but their apartments were destroyed. They were left with nothing, but each other.

"It's definitely something that brings you together, to someone that you hadn't met, that you didn't know," said Nees.

The connections didn't stop there. When the families moved into a nearby hotel, overwhelming support came pouring in from the Cabot community.

"People just calling and offering their help, doing everything for me and we don't even know each other," said Toney.

"I didn't know a lot of them either, but for her to be new here and none of them to know her, the outpouring has just been unbelievable," said Nees.

Both Nees and Toney plan to future neighbors once they both get back on their feet. They say they hope to remain lifelong friends.

"I would have met her eventually, but I wouldn't have gotten to know her like I know her now and I feel very blessed," said Nees.

Family and friends have set up GoFundMe accounts for anyone that would like to make a donation to the families.
