Pulaski Tech pilots 3D hospitality program for adults with disabilities

Beginning this fall, Pulaski Tech will offer young adults with developmental and learning disabilities post-secondary education and pre-employment skills in the areas of culinary and hospitality.

The program – called Pulaski Tech 3D – is a two-year program, during which students can earn certificates in culinary and hospitality functions. Students begin with a core curriculum that teaches the foundations of hospitality and employability – hospitality skills, professional conduct and sanitation.  Students can then choose to work on specific certificates. Some examples of certificates are Certified Prep Cook, Certified Banquet Server, and Certified Housekeeping Assistant.

Applications are now being accepted, and orientation will be July 31-Aug. 9. Classes begin on Aug. 16 and will take place Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at the Arkansas Culinary and Hospitality Management Institute at the college’s Little Rock-South site, 13000 Interstate 30.

The first-year pilot program is privately funded by Lisenne Rockefeller, who in 2003 founded Riverdale Academy as her commitment to help developmentally disabled students and students with learning differences from kindergarten through high school. After age 21, however, there is little opportunity in the central Arkansas area to continue post-secondary education.

The Pulaski Tech 3D program name means new dimensions for people with developmental disabilities and learning differences.

“Just as a 3D film adds a whole new dimension to the film experience, the 3D program is a new way to approach learning differences,” said Pulaski Technical College instructor Linda Ducrot, who is coordinating the program.

The program is student-centered.  In addition to classroom experience and hands-on skills training, students will receive one-on-one coaching and mentoring to help them reach their highest potential. Staff also will help students improve their critical thinking skills, independent functioning and professionalism needed for the workplace.
