Pulaski Tech registration continues through Aug. 15

Pulaski Technical College fall registration continues through Aug. 15.

Students who have never attended any college must meet minimum reading scores for admission and must apply and submit all required admissions documents by Aug. 7 to enroll for the fall term. Students who qualify and submit all documents by the deadline date can schedule an appointment with an academic advisor for course selection and registration through Aug. 15.All other students can apply and submit all required documents through Aug. 15 at 6 p.m.

Students who did not previously schedule an appointment with an academic advisor can register without an appointment from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. August 13-15.    

Classes begin Monday, Aug. 19.

Schedule of events to begin new school year

It is time to begin getting ready for the 2013-14 school year - times and places to pick up class schedules, and for open houses and orientations have been set for the Cabot School District:

All Elementary Schools:

Open Houses, Aug. 15 (times by first letter of last name): A-L – 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; M-Z – 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Middle School North and South: Schedule Pick-up, Aug. 8 - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Middle School open houses:

Sixth grade: Aug. 12, Teams 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 - 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Teams 6.4, 6.5, 6.6 - 6:30 p.m to 7:30 p.m.

Fifth Grade: Aug. 13, Teams 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 - 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Teams 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 - 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

ASMSA instructor receives teaching award

HOT SPRINGS — The Lewis E. Lyle Chapter of the Air Force Association has named Nick Seward its Chapter Teacher of the Year for the high school division.

Seward is a computer science instructor at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts.

He is also a coach of the school’s CyberPatriot competition team. The competition, sponsored by the Air Force Association, features teams of high school students interested in careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The teams compete to protect computer systems from cyber attacks.

 Schools nominate teachers for the award, and the chapter members vote on the nominees, said Larry Louden, the Lyle Chapter president. Louden and Morris Cash, the chapter’s secretary, presented the award plus a $250 prize to Seward this week.

FAYETTEVILLE – Hayden Elliott from Cabot has been selected from more than 500 applicants to receive a University of Arkansas Honors College Fellowship.

Pulaski Tech pilots 3D hospitality program for adults with disabilities

Beginning this fall, Pulaski Tech will offer young adults with developmental and learning disabilities post-secondary education and pre-employment skills in the areas of culinary and hospitality.

The program – called Pulaski Tech 3D – is a two-year program, during which students can earn certificates in culinary and hospitality functions. Students begin with a core curriculum that teaches the foundations of hospitality and employability – hospitality skills, professional conduct and sanitation.  Students can then choose to work on specific certificates. Some examples of certificates are Certified Prep Cook, Certified Banquet Server, and Certified Housekeeping Assistant.

Applications are now being accepted, and orientation will be July 31-Aug. 9.

ASMSA to hold commencement ceremony May 25

HOT SPRINGS — The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts will hold its commencement ceremony at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in Summit Arena at the Hot Springs Convention Center. There are 97 students in the Class of 2013.

Three seniors will speak during the ceremony. Student Government Association President Sorena Lo of Paris will give the senior address. Mehr Shah of Little Rock will provide the welcome, and Dimple Shah of Paragould will give the senior speech. Lo is the daughter of Vanessa and Hue Lo. Mehr Shah is the daughter of Sitara and M.B. Shah. Dimple Shah is the daughter of Nisha and Himansu Shah.
