Legislators convene to discuss I-40 and I-55 mess

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Legislators convened at the Capitol Tuesday to discuss the highway debacle that had I-40 and I-55 backed up for more than twenty hours.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department attended the meeting to see what could have been improved and what can still be done to prevent stalls like these in the future.

"I don't know if there was anything that was within our control that we didn't do," said AHTD director Scott Bennett in an interview.

The highway department says it followed pre-treatment procedures prior to the ice storm that dumped up to six inches of sleet in eastern parts of the state. Still, the discussion at the Capitol revolved around funding.

"One of the things we hear all the time is Missouri did this, Missouri did that. Missouri has four times the capabilities that we do. If [people] expect us to operate like Missouri, it's going to take money," continued Bennett.
