Save some money but wait up to two years for the Safe Sidewalks to School project at Ward Central Elementary School? Or hire an outside firm to design and engineer the project and have sidewalks in place for the next school year?

Ward City Council members posed the question at a special council meeting held Jan. 31 and decided for the safety of children and a rapid completion date.

Mayor Art Brooke and council members Bill Moon, Jeff Shaver, John Staley, Charles Gastineau and Don Howard attended the meeting.

New weight limits for highway traffic

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.  Beginning February 14, the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) will enforce new weight limits on several State Highways in the Fayetteville shale areas, according to AHTD officials. Arkansas Highway Police will strictly enforce the newly posted limits that have been established because of significant damage to the roadways from existing traffic.

The new restrictions are located on a total of 133 miles on 13 sections of highways in Cleburne, Conway, Faulkner, Independence, Van Buren and White Counties. Eight of those sections will drop from 80,000 pound limits to 73,280.
